The change in the colour of leaves is just beginning in Southern Ontario. There is still a great deal of green foliage. This chestnut leaf is from a seedling tree that planted itself and is now about 2 ft. tall. It is growing under the canopy of other trees in a shady environment. Its colour change is quite different from our other deciduous trees. Interestingly, there is not another chestnut tree growing within a 6 block radius. I love how birds, animals and wind will take a seed or nut and travel until it finds a place to germinate and grow. How lucky I am to have this beautiful little chestnut tree.
The American Chestnut is a tall deciduous tree that formerly reached about 30 metres in height; however, trees in Ontario are now typically only five to 10 metres tall. The bark is dark grey-brown and cracks with age. Leaves are mostly hairless, 15 to 30 centimetres long and five to 10 centimetres wide at maturity, with coarsely and sharply serrated edges and a long pointed tip...
