Description
The change in the colour of leaves is just beginning in Southern Ontario. There is still a great deal of green foliage. This chestnut leaf is from a seedling tree that planted itself and is now about 2 ft. tall. It is growing under the canopy of other trees in a shady environment. Its colour change is quite different from our other deciduous trees. Interestingly, there is not another chestnut tree growing within a 6 block radius. I love how birds, animals and wind will take a seed or nut and travel until it finds a place to germinate and grow. How lucky I am to have this beautiful little chestnut tree.
The American Chestnut is a tall deciduous tree that formerly reached about 30 metres in height; however, trees in Ontario are now typically only five to 10 metres tall. The bark is dark grey-brown and cracks with age. Leaves are mostly hairless, 15 to 30 centimetres long and five to 10 centimetres wide at maturity, with coarsely and sharply serrated edges and a long pointed tip. Chestnut trees have both male and female flowers but cannot self pollinate. The fruit is a spiny bur-like husk enclosing one to five edible nuts. Small mammals and birds distribute, store and bury the nuts. Thank you for viewing. Barbara McMahon

Simply beautiful is the word. This reminds me of a drawing/painting I did on a single leaf in school and the myriad colours on the leaf itself.
Barbara McMahon replied:
