While on holiday in Florida I noticed this man sitting on the park bench close to mine. He remained with his head down for at least a half hour. It was a 100 degrees outside and his jacket was heavy wool. My career was in social services so I was no stranger to this sight nor did I fear. I began to eat my lunch and he slowly raised his head. I took my opportunity to engage and ask if he was hungry. We shared my lunch. Very few words were spoken but he did tell me he was on day release from a psychiatric facility. I was astounded that this poor man would be released without someone accompanying him. He had his beer and cigarettes for comfort.......but where was the comfort of another human being!!!!!! This man's despair and disorientation on this day was due to the confusion of being amidst crowds and completely out of his known element. Much needs to be done to help those that are so misunderstood!!! I contacted a local authourity to make him aware that this poor man may not mak...

Oh my goodness I've just read your words.....how could they do that to him. He must have felt so scared :-( I'm so glad it was you wh sat with him and not someone else who could have done much more harm than good. I bet you still think about him now. People touch our lives so much without even realising it sometimes. Thank you for being lovely x
Barbara McMahon replied:
Dear Sarah, What wonderfully kind words. Thank you. If I had chosen another spot to sit I would not have noticed this man. Experience and fate brings us fleeting moments where we as human beings make decisions to do no harm. I'm glad I was there too.
