Artist's Description
This past summer a charity canoe race was held on the Grand River in Ontario. It was a brutally hot day with a strong head wind. The Grand River is a fast moving, wide river with many rapids, shallows, and rocks to navigate. I watched the experienced young canoeists travel the 30 kms. and arrive at the end totally spent.
This elderly gentleman was passing under the last bridge with approximately 1 km. left in his long voyage. His canoe was hand made and short in comparison with the other canoes. He was alone with a strong look of determination on his face to finish, and he did!!! Spent and sore.....but triumphant! The human spirit continues to amaze me. Barbara McMahon
