Description
Upon this poplar stump two carved mermaids remain. A few years ago there were four. Now there are none. The tree stump and carvings have gone back to the soil. Over the years they have rotted. I am so fortunate to have captured these last two beautiful mermaids. Found along the Confederation Park walkway, Burlington, Ontario.
Bill Le Blanc is the sculptor. They are carved atop stumps of poplar trees which are common in the area. The sculptures only last 10 - 15 years old. Unfortunately it seems that no one has put even a wood preserver on them, but what's worse, vandals have kicked and hacked at them. Sometimes Bill comes back to repair what he can. Many of them have almost completely decayed. They grew from a seed into a poplar tree and when life seem finished for the poplar tree, Bill's vision arose from its stump and roots. Thank you Bill Le Blanc.

A fine capture , and a heartfelt tribute to a deserving artist.! At least this visual memory survives to remind us of past beauty.....
Barbara McMahon replied:
Thank you Douglas for your lovely comment! There have been a few times that I have returned to a place to reshoot a tree or building only to find it is totally gone! I'm glad that I was able to capture this sculpture before it disappeared.
