Description
Algoma Quebecois was a new name on the lakes in 2012. The vessel is in its 50th year of service and, while it has changed owners before, this was the first change in name.
Originally known as Quebecois, the 222.50 metre long bulk carrier was built by Canadian Vickers Ltd. and entered service for the Papachristidis Co. in April 1963. It had been built in two sections at Montreal and these were then joined.
The ship had accommodation for a crew of 40 plus four corporate passengers. There were five cargo holds and the vessel could carry close to 25,000 tons of cargo at Seaway draft. It was powered by a 9,000 shaft horsepower steam turbine engine and could do 17 miles per hour fully loaded.
The ship was actually owned by Canadian General Electric in the early years and then moved to a Papachristidis subsidiary called Eastern Lake Carriers in 1965. Mr. Papachristidis decided to concentrate on the ocean going side of the business and this was one of five company freighters sold to Upper Lakes Shipping in 1972. All proved to be good carriers for the company and this is one of two that remain in service 40 years later.
Quebecois got stuck on a mud bank at the entrance to Lake St. Clair on Aug. 26, 1979, after an electronic malfunction. It was released in nine hours. High winds put the vessel aground in the St. Lawrence on Nov. 12, 1982, but the ship was refloated the next day.
Iron ore and grain have been the primary cargoes over the years but Quebecois brought bauxite to Thorold on Dec. 8, 2004, sugar to Toronto and often takes cement from Clarkson to Duluth.
With the disbanding of the well known Upper Lakes Shipping fleet in 2011, this vessel moved under the banner of the Algoma Central Corporation and it was renamed Algoma Quebecois at the beginning of the 2012 season.
Currently the Algoma Quebecois is moored in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada.
