Description
This cast iron hand pump was our only source of water when my parents purchased a farm in southern Ontario. The water was freezing cold and had a high content of iron, which was evident in the colour and the odour. On hot summer days after bringing in the hay, my brother and I would pump for each other and let the cold waters clean and refresh us. It was also used to pump water for the cattle, pigs, chickens, ducks, one goat and the horse.
I revisited this pump for the last time this past summer. The farm has finally left family hands. I tested the pump and it still poured it's refreshing resource more than 50 years after my first attempt at pumping.
I'm so glad I captured this image as part of my memories of growing up.
Thank you for viewing. Barbara McMahon

"Well" Done Barbara!! (-: An outstanding display for this nostalgic, once-all-important, mainstay of farm homes! I have a similar one—painted Red—in my backyard. It makes a cheerful focal point against the snowy landscape! L/V&F

Great capture, and brought back memories of pumping water at my grandparent's and aunt & uncle's homes when I was much younger. My aunt & uncle were considered "modern" once they finally got the pump moved inside the house and no longer had to go outside for water.
