Description
Once a thriving fishing village, Port Maitland, Ontario, is today a small but tight-knit community of about 100 people perched on the north shore of Lake Erie at the mouth of the Grand River. A picturesque lighthouse, built in 1830, marks the meeting point of the two bodies of water and serves as a reminder of the location's importance in history. The first Welland Canal was connected to the Grand River by means of a feeder canal (still called the Feeder Canal) that ran through Port Maitland.
