This is a Great Golden Digger Wasp, Sphex ichneumoneus. The species is found from coast to coast. The adults visit flowers for nectar, and the female Great Golden Digger Wasp preys upon Katydids, Crickets and related Long Horned Orthopterans to provision a nest for her young.

Great capture! I was just reading about these wasps while trying to ID a similar one that I photographed. You probably did not have to worry about being stung, as they are apparently not very aggressive. /l

You have got a great macro lens there Barbara....and a well done shot too !
Barbara McMahon replied:
Thank you Michel! I don't own a macro lens. Just a bit of nerve to be 6 inches away from this wasp with the kit lens that came with a Canon XT4ti. I thought it would be worth getting stung to get the shot. It is the first time I had seen one of these wasps. I kept my fingers crossed that he would be enjoying his meal so much that he wouldn't notice me.
