In December 2013, one of the worst ice storms to hit Southern Ontario, Quebec and the Maritime Provinces created havoc knocking down trees, power lines and created dangerous conditions for 1,000's of people. The same storm swept across many of the American States. At this moment, 6 days later, power has not been restored to at least 80,000 buildings.
I lay in my bed, listening to the loud crack following by the crashing branches of huge trees in my neighbourhood and leapt from my bed when electrical transformers were blowing, sending an eerie blue light followed by flames throughout the sky. If that wasn't enough to keep me awake..........there was someone/something scratching at my bedroom window. Being the coward that I am (at least during storms) I pulled the duvet over my head and tried to ignore the sound.
At first light I looked out my bedroom window to see my 40 year old birch tree bent over like an aging giant and one large branch was leaning against my window. It had not snapped and thankfully the next day there was a slight warming trend and the limb began to rise. My beautiful birch had been spared.
