A Great Man

Description
This watercolour portrait is of my Father, Aleksander, wearing his military shirt during World War II. Aleksander always had a sparkle in his eye and was quick to smile, but beneath that happy countenance was a man of great depth, deep faith, a zest for life who attracted the admiration of all that came to know him.
Aleksander will forever be young in my eyes. He passed away at age 51.

Dear Catherine, I am so humbled and honoured by your choice of Favourite of 2012, in the Female Artists - Creative Women group. As I type this with uncontrollable tears streaming down my face, I am so grateful that this portrait has moved someone that also understands how much it means to me. I'm showing my vulnerability in public I suppose by writing this, but as artists we do that on a regular basis anyway. I think at this point my father would say "Basia, stop crying now because it's going to make it rain and we still have to bring in the hay!" That would always make me laugh and the tears would dry up. Thank you so much Dear Catherine for the ultimate compliment. You have so honoured my father's memory The very best to you and your's in 2013! Barbara

Catherine, Thank you so much for your wonderful comment! I so appreciate that you took the time to tell me how the painting made you feel and what it evoked in you. Indeed he was a joyful man despite very hard times. He made hard work fun, wondered at the beauty of nature, sang like no one was listening, but most of all, had a love for all mankind and creatures that is rarely seen in human beings. I hope I possess a tenth of his personality. May your memories of your own Father continue to make you reflect and think and most of all smile.... for you are his legacy! Thank you for your support. Best Wishes, Barbara

Barbara... I love this portrait of your Father! You can see the joy in his eyes.. and to paint such an incredible tribute to him is heart-warming to see. Evoked strong feelings in me, as my wonderful Father died at 57, and isn't that the wonder of good art... that it stops us, in our busy lives and allows us to reflect and think. Thank you! v/f

Thank you Jose. I'm glad you like it. An easy portrait when one knows the subject well. The portrait is of my incredible father in his younger years.
